I keep putting off scanning my slides because I know it is going to devour
a huge amount of time.  On the other hand, the slides then will be in a
usable medium. If the scanning works.  Sorry to read of your woes.  These
incredible labor-saving devices! The more powerful they become, the more
labor-saving they become, uh, if I could just figure out how to get them to
do what I want....
