It is possible. The Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, Martin
McGuinness of Sinn Fein, has said there ought to be a refendum on the
subject. The Irish both sides of the border have now got used to free
movement across it and it would cut down on the smuggling that would
otherwise reappear. The political sitiation has changed radically over
past decades and the population has become more balanced between
Protestants and Catholics. The Churches (at a national level) would
almost certainly welcome it since they are organized on an island-wide
basis with both Anglican and RC Primates being in Armagh - each with
dioceses that straddle the border. Having a common currency and set of
laws would make their administration simpler.
