It was a slow rebound, something like 7 or 8 years from memory.  At the 
time of the Townsend romance she was third in line to the Throne, and 
would have been expected to have a significant role, quite possibly 
regent, if the Queen gad died while Charles was still young. He was 
about five at the time.  Bu the time she married in 1960 Prince Andrew 
had been born so she had dropped to fourt in line and Charles was an 
adolescent.
