The Market Place for the Lambeth Conference

Compiled by AO staff from press releases and interviews

2 JUNE 1998, London, England:
Last summer George Carey, Archbishop of Canterbury, decided to have a 'Market Place' for the Lambeth Conference, and appointed the rector of an American parish as its coordinator, the Reverend Bob McCloskey, Rector of St Stephen's, Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida (ECUSA). The Rev. Mr McCloskey will be working with Lambeth Conference manager David Long to produce this event.

The Market Place is both a physical place and also a set of designated evenings when various events have been scheduled for the bishops and for the general public who might find themselves in the neighbourhood.

The Rev. Mr McCloskey reports that the Market Place marquee will be a centrally located display area where more than fifty church agencies and commercial purveyors will have exhibits and displays throughout the conference. These range from such companies as Wippell and Almy to missionary societies--and everything in between. Within the marquee there will be a 75-seat visitors' gallery in which the plenary sessions of the conference can be seen over closed-circuit television. Visitors will be able to secure daily passes through a registration desk.

The seven Market Place Evenings will provide a variety of lectures, receptions, dialogues and entertainment programs for the bishops and visitors. The last Market Place evening, August 4, will be a multicultural musical celebration featuring The Miserable Offenders (the famous Anglican duo from New York), Garth Hewitt, a well-known priest/troubador, the Afro-Caribbean choir of the London Evangelical Christian Centre, and a London Tamilese ensemble.

Should you find yourself in Canterbury, the Market Place marquee and evening events are open to the public. Anglicans Online hopes to bring you more specific information about the details of the Market Place Evening schedule when the information reaches us.

You may make organizational enquiries to Bob McCloskey until 11 June by 'phone +1 305 448-2601 or fax +1 305 448-2153, and after 12 June at +44 01608 658896 or fax +44 [ 01608] 659135.

This Lambeth Market Place was conceived by Archbishop Carey and is a new feature of the Lambeth Conference this year.
