Diocese of East Tennessee elects third bishop
17 October 1998, Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

The Rev. Charles vonRosenberg, rector of St James Church, Wilmington, N.C., was elected the third bishop of the Diocese of East Tennessee on Saturday, Oct. 17. The election at St John's Cathedral, Knoxville took about 5 hours and 15 ballots. On the final ballot, vonRosenberg, 51, received 63 clergy votes and 108 lay delegate votes. He needed 59 clergy votes and 91 lay votes to be elected.

"Thank you, sir. I'm very honored and certainly humbled," Rosenberg said to Bishop Robert Tharp when the bishop called to tell him of the election.

von Rosenberg has served as rector of St James Church since 1994. He is married to Ann, and they have two sons.
